Yao, Li, A Zero-Sum Game? Repression and Protest in China , Government and Opposition, Vol. 54, no. 2, 2019, pp. 309-335 The author draws on a data set of 1,418 protests in China to argue that the state does allow a limited space for protest and that most protesters operate within these limits. Therefore 'contention' in China is a non-zero sum game, as opposed to the extremes of revolt and repression often studied in the past.
